The houses in astrology each represent different parts of one’s life. Here, the 1st house is all about the self or the ‘helm’.

1st House of Self
It represents you, your basic approach to life and how you come across to others. It’s also about your physical appearance, your aura/vibe that you give off or subconsciously want to be known as. It’s the moment your spirit enters your physical body, the moment of inception.
This as a foundation, will be a canvas for your other planets/energies to paint more characteristics over it. This is also why some of us do not resonate well if at all with our zodiac/sun sign.

Most Important House In A Chart
This house is one of the most important houses as it’s not only angular but also paints the framework of all the other houses. In order to know what your first house is, you will need your exact birth time.
While there are ways to go about rectifying your exact birth time, it may not even be right to the exact minute, but sufficient to sieve out the nuances in your life.
Look at the first house as if it were your physical self. Its relation to other houses/planets will be the foundation in which you approach those subjects whether it’s challenging or harmonious.

Aversion to Houses
It’s also in aversion to the 2nd, 6th, 8th and 12th houses. Aversion meaning it can’t really see the energies there, thus explaining why those houses are traditionally considered, negative. It’s averse because traditional astrology does not practice aspects like semi-sextile and quincunx/inconjunctions.
Planets being in the first house greatly affects the energy it brings to your life. Placing importance and emphasis in understanding what the planet is about and what it means to be in that sign will help you in understanding yourself a lot better.

Joy of Mercury in the 1st House
The first house is also where Mercury has its joy. This means that even if it’s in detriment or fall, there is an advantage by being there. Mercury in and of itself represents the way your mind works, how your communication to others is.
It’s neither a benefic(good) nor a malefic(bad) by itself. But if you have planets co-present or aspecting Mercury, that will affect its expression. There are deeper explanations to why it has its joy there which we will not go into but if you are interested in finding that out, traditional astrology would be of interest to you.
The first house is also commonly referred to as the ascendant or rising sign that you have. We have done a post on the different rising signs that you can refer to – What is Your Rising Sign? (Aries to Virgo) and What is Your Rising Sign? (Libra to Pisces).
Understanding what sign your first house is in, the planets there (if any) and its aspects will greatly affect how you approach all the other areas of your life. Knowing what the ruler is, and where it’s placed will also be of key importance in possibly discovering recurring themes or just where your focus is on, in this life.
