Jupiter Returns are an important time to note as it amplifies positive opportunities, personal growth, as well as areas of luck and abundance. As with Saturn Returns, all planets have a ‘return’, where they transit back to your original natal chart placement – sign and degree. The timing of this depends on the planet itself. Jupiter takes around 12 years (11.86 years).
So for every ~12 years, Jupiter, the planet that speaks of abundance and expansion will be back in the sign and degree it was in when you were born.
Jupiter Returns will occur at the ages when you are 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96 years old.
To be exact, it’s slightly before 12, slightly before 24, slightly before 36 etc..
If you’re now at one of those ages, this is going to be important to note.
While there’s going to be growth and expansion, this may either be negative or positive. In order to know what it’s going to be, look back at previous ages in multiples of 12 (12 years old, 24 years old etc..) and think about what growth or events occurred. For a more accurate way, look at where your Jupiter is in, its dignity and house placement, aspects and if it’s your sect benefic.
What does Jupiter represent?
Jupiter rules over Sagittarius and Pisces. It is widely known as the planet of abundance, expansion and wisdom, but also of luck and opportunities.
It’s of the higher mind, philosophy, spiritual growth, expansion of horizons. It wants to open your mind up to the world, beyond what you’re comfortable knowing. It pushes you towards new experiences and knowledge. While Mercury is left brain activity, more ‘logic’ based, Jupiter is right brain activity, more ‘abstract’ based.
Whichever house it’s in, in your natal chart, is going to see an abundance, more of, for better or for worse. Jupiter in the 6th could speak of ‘more-than-usual’ tasks to do at work if not in its dignified sign. While in the 2nd, could speak of material abundance or if not dignified, of excessive spending that you may not be able to upkeep.
Jupiter is a day chart benefic and considered a greater benefic, as compared to Venus, a night chart benefic and considered a lesser benefic. So if you’re born before ~6pm (dependent on country of birth) Jupiter is most likely a planet that is going to positively impact you. But even if you’re born during the night time (after ~6pm), Jupiter is still considered a benefic, but the extent of its effects are heavily dependent on dignities and aspects.
What happens during a Jupiter Return?
This is going to be heavily dependent on the house and sign you have your Jupiter in, as well as any aspect it’s making with other points or planets in your chart. On a general note, here’s what to expect.
1. Positive Energy
An increase in positive energy that translates into your life. It’s like there’s an extra helping hand in life that is going to boost you up. It’s an unknowing positive influence that lights up a certain part of you in having a more positive outlook in life.
2. Spans 1 Year, Heightened Effects Over 1 Month
While Jupiter is going to stay in the same sign for ~1 year, the full effects will be heightened for about 1 month, using a 3 degree orb when it conjuncts your natal Jupiter placement. Note that different astrologers use different degree orbs that may also be dependent on how fast or slow moving the planet is and the particular aspect it is making. It’s safe to assume a general approach of 3 degrees but could stretch to more than 1 month.
3. More, More, More
Expect abundance. You may see opportunities in everything or opportunities may just come to you. See the possibilities in all that present themselves. It’s not a time to restrict yourself to comfort but to accept and explore an expansion of your horizons.
4. Alignment
There’s a certain level of wisdom that comes with Jupiter Returns, aligning us to a truer path for our soul. This may be spiritual, philosophical, metaphysical, or even educational. Of course as we age we gain more wisdom but with Jupiter returns it’s more evident and should be put to good use. Not just wisdom in the sense of intellect, but also a push for you to take certain risks towards what you’ve always been thinking of but never really explored.
How to make full use of a Jupiter Return?
1. Your Jupiter Placement
Find out what house, sign your Jupiter is in. If possible, Jupiter’s aspects and dignity. The house Jupiter is in, is going to highlight the affected area of your life, while the sign and aspects it’s in will show how it’s going to show up and what other areas of your life are affected.
2. Current Jupiter Transit
Find out when the transit of Jupiter will enter your sign, and take note of when it will exit your sign. During this 12 months, be open to any opportunities that arises. Be bolder and more optimistic. Things are more in your favour, but you’ll need to be open to receiving and not limiting yourself to whatever you’re used to.
3. Dates of Conjunction Between Transit Jupiter and Your Natal Jupiter
If possible, find out from an astrologer what is the exact month (~30 days) in which Jupiter will conjunct your natal Jupiter. That particular month will be very important.
4. Be Open
Opportunities or things that present themselves may not necessarily make logical sense for you to act on. Note that Jupiter is the right mind, the abstract mind, the higher mind. Jupiter sees the big picture, an overarching view. It’s not going to function like Mercury where things need to be more detailed, constructive and planned or logical. Be open. Think big. Jupiter just wants to expand your world.
5. Be Patient
It may not be very evident right from the start about how things are expanding for you. Note that Jupiter returns span over 1 year. Do not expect instant expansion the moment Jupiter enters your sign, although some effects may already be in place.
Just remember that this period is going to be very important for gains of any kind. Whether it’s going to be an expansion of your home, increase in wealth, gain in philosophical views, an increase in social interactions or a deeper connection with your subconscious, it’s the time to receive and be open and not close yourself off.
