What is an Ecstatic Dance?
It’s movement. Just moving to the sound of the music without being inebriated. Sober, Drug-Free, No Talking. It’s moving however you want, while respecting the space of others, unless consented.
It’s about going to a meditative state where you’re just moving to the sound of the music. Dancing barefoot, without phones or cameras, with no judgements from anyone, just moving.
It always starts off slow, just warming you up. Then highs and lows in the middle, ending off with a cooldown where it’s slow again. They usually conclude everything with a sound bath.
Here are some samples of what they play during an Ecstatic Dance
“Dance is the answer. Because when you dance and you really get into the dance, you lose yourself. You lose your personality. You forget your name, you forget your job, you forget your status, you forget your future, you forget your past. What you’re involved in, is the now. And the now, is blissful. The now is really an amazing experience.”
Meditation isn’t just about sitting still..
Different DJs have different ‘themes’ and personally the music is important. Find one you like and you’ll be able to get into the ‘now’ more easily. You’ll be able to feel that connection to spirit and it’s feels almost like an out of body experience, truly meditative. Not all meditation techniques require you to sit still, back straightened. There are many different meditation techniques.
Not everyone can sit still and meditate although the effects of meditation are truly astounding. You find your peace, your calm, your own awareness. You come back into yourself and get a clearer view of everything in your life. You’re not just you, but tapped into the universal consciousness. You’re able to discover more of yourself, what you want to be, what you want to do and align yourself towards your higher self.
Of Synchronicities..
Then when you can link the synchronies in your life everything really makes sense.
Realising the first time I did this sort of meditative dance was back when I was around 16 years old, in front of a laptop and having some sort of trance music on. In that moment I felt something that I knew I had to record.
Also, my music taste started from pop. Then to indie/folk. Then to progressive. Then to trance. And now it’s more tribal/shamanic in nature.
From going to music festivals like Laneway, then to State of Trance, then now to events like these ecstatic dance. You can clearly see the progression.
Everyone is in a constant state of evolving. Especially when you just move along with it instead of resisting it. You’ll be able to know why after a while. The synchronicities in your own life are endless. Look back at where you started from and how you are now and you can almost see where you’re headed.
This was just one of the many synchronicities in my life. Try an ecstatic dance for yourself and see if it’s up your alley.
Koh Phangan Ecstatic Dances
In Phangan, there are 3 main ones for ecstatic dances. There’s pros and cons for each of them and it just depends on what you prefer.
Thursdays – Shivari (7pm to 1030pm)
Shivari has a cacao ceremony and a very nice ambience.
Fridays – AUM (7pm to 1030pm)
AUM has a sauna with occasional shamanic drums/chants and a pool.
Sundays – Pyramid (1030am to 230pm)
Pyramid has an undeniable energy even though it’s in the ‘morning’ at 11am.
So are you able to see the synchronicities in your own life and have you tried Ecstatic Dance?
