Dictionary of Consciousness: “The fact of awareness by the mind of itself and the world”.
Yes that’s a very basic sense of the word. As humans we all have some level of consciousness. But what does it exactly mean when one speaks about consciousness, consciously?
Awakened? Enlightened? Emotionally Intelligent? Intellectually Aware?
It’s not learned, it’s experienced.
While it’s a bit hard to explain, Swami Sarvapriyananda explains it very well.
1. Consciousness is not a part of your body or your mind.
You can’t say you’re conscious just because you have something in your body or know of what it’s about. It’s not something that you own, neither is it something you can just think of just because you read it in books.
2. It is apart but it pervades and illumines the mind and body.
While it is separate from the mind and body, it brings forth an added awareness of whatever is experienced through the mind and body.
3. Consciousness is not limited by the mind and body.
You can experience consciousness but it will never really be fully understood. Our human minds and bodies can only interpret so much in this world, in the 3D.
4. It is known in the functioning of the mind and body.
We do however need the mind and the body to know what it is. It’s felt through every sense of our being, and without our mind and/or body, we won’t be able to experience consciousness here.
5. Without the mind and body, consciousness still exists but it’s not known, not experienced.
Many in this world are not conscious. That’s not to say consciousness doesn’t exist. We can still go about our lives without being conscious, just that it’s not known or experienced.

There’s something magical in consciousness that I hope everyone gets to experience. It’s not just about living your daily lives with more awareness for humankind, the environment or being more in touch with your soul.
It’s about knowingness, that we’re all part of a plan, in the larger scheme of things. We’re not individuals, we’re one. We’re not just humans, we’re souls integrating with a human body, experiencing the 3D. Life here is like playing a multiplayer 1st person VR game, complete with emotions and sensations.
It’s about a connection with source, an inner knowing about life on Earth and beyond. It is everything, but also nothing. It’s about being still, yet moving. It is about admiring life detached in that particular moment of consciousness but still living and experiencing life as part of consciousness.
It’s about being in awe of things you weren’t previously consciously aware of. It doesn’t require effort, but an observance from detachment of your current environment. It opens your already opened eyes, as if there’s a filter/layer in which you now see and interact with the world.
Once you’ve experienced it, your view of the world will no longer be the same.
