Most of us are familiar with our birthday month and the zodiac sign that we are. That itself is indeed your Sun sign. But what does it really mean?

While the sun signifies various elements in one’s life, one of the main significations of the Sun is one’s soul – wisdom, mind and will. It could also be seen as your basic personality and general outlook in life. Depending on where it’s placed in the birth chart, it also shows where you ‘shine’ the best.

We’ll speak a bit about the rulership and dignities of the signs.

Leo Sun

If you have a Leo sun, meaning you were born between 23rd July to 22nd August in any given year, your sun sign is one of the two most desirable places to be in. It’s considered to be in its domicile. Extremely loyal, it gives you almost a regal sense of self-confidence and a strong sense of will. It feels ‘at home’ with this placement, with everything it needs. You are extremely generous and charismatic. You give off a warmth to others and are generally very sociable. Almost always kind and tender hearted, you still desire attention to a certain extent. However, still encompassing all traits of the Sun, you can be domineering and egotistical. When angered, your bark is as ferocious as your bite and you will need some time to cool off.

Aries Sun

Another desirable place for the sun to be in is in Aries, for those born between 21st March to 19th April in any given year. It gives you an added assertiveness that people recognize. It’s like being at your best friend’s house and having a party. You always feel like you need to start something, to act on it. While you generally do so, you find it difficult to follow it throughout or finish it. You like to be first and generally prefer when things are done your way. There is a certain passion behind your actions and you are very direct.

Two of the more challenging placements for the sun to be in are Libra (23rd September to 22nd October) and Aquarius (20th January to 18th February). It’s considered challenging because the sun is about your own sense of self. In these two placements, it’s rather dependent on another person or collective.

Libra Sun

Having a libra sun is considered a fall placement. You tend to balance and harmonize with others, while the Sun is typically representative of your self, not others. The opinions or feedback from others will influence your own core, as you find a need to balance it out, harmoniously. It can lead to an internal conflict between who you really are and what you really are, depending on who you interact with, especially so in terms of your relationship with your spouse.

Aquarius Sun

Aquarius suns are more altruistic than egotistic. This placement is considered a detriment, as rather than it being about yourself, you will think of the collective first, then of yourself. This also stems from your need to be different from the crowd, that self identity. You don’t want the attention and you don’t want to be seen. You’d much rather others ‘shine’, even though you know things that they don’t. You also think that the knowledge in this world is ‘unknowable’. Even though you may be very experienced in one field, you still think you don’t really know that field. This also applies to the future. You think that no one will know what the future entails and thus are opposed to any notion of prediction.

While these are just basic interpretations of the sun, one must still dive deeper and look at any aspects the other stars are making with the Sun and the birth chart as a whole.
