One of the beauty in traditional astrology lies in the symmetry of rulers. Giving a methodical balance to the approach of the 7 traditional planets, each planet rules two signs while the sun and moon, being luminaries, only rules one sign. While the Thema Mundi starts off with Cancer rising, for illustration purposes of symmetry, we’ll use Taurus as a rising.

Leo is ruled by the Sun
Cancer is ruled by the Moon
Taurus and Libra are ruled by Venus
Aries and Scorpio are ruled by Mars
Sagittarius and Pisces are ruled by Jupiter
Capricorn and Aquarius are ruled by Saturn

Notice how each of the planets, except the luminaries (Sun and Moon) are traditionally ruling 2 planets? And how they are symmetrical in the way the signs are displayed in the chart? This is by no coincidence and every sign/planet has their own justification for being at that specific position.

Further characteristics of the planets can be seen here, with the balance and symmetry being emphasized. Venus in Taurus unifies, while Mars in Scorpio separates. This may seem different for the luminaries and Saturn, but Schmidt refers to the Sun as “select”, opposite to Saturn in Aquarius as “reject”. And the moon to being “gather and include” as opposed to Saturn in Capricorn as “exclude”.

As with more natures of the planets, the symmetry and balance found in understanding the qualities are evident. Traditional rulers will also allow one to understand one’s birth chart not just on a basic level but also on a deeper level, as the fun begins when deciphering planets in signs, then the aspects it makes.
