3rd House – Siblings

The 3rd (third) house is all about siblings, routine/short distance travels, neighbours, relatives. Planets here, aspects it is making, ruler, ruler’s position and its aspects will tell you more about the following:

  1. Your relationship with siblings
  2. Immediate neighbours living near you
  3. Relatives as a whole
  4. Any short travels you’ll make.

Depending on the context of your environment, short travels would usually imply mode of transport via vehicles like bicycle, motorbike, cars, bus etc. Taking a plane and ferry would usually be more of a long distance travel (9th house topic).

Cadent House

The 3rd house is a cadent house, least in terms of strength as compared to the angular and succedent houses. It is however making a sextile aspect to the 1st house, thus one of the better cadent houses.

Opposite to the 9th house, the 3rd is also about personal beliefs in a religious, philosophical, cosmological context and of divination/dreams.

Favourable or Unfavourable Travel

Valens, 2nd-century Hellenistic astrologer, also mentions that when receiving benefics here, there would be travel under favourable circumstances. Some also receive messages from God, know the future, or through the foresight of God avoid danger.

If the overall chart basis is great, the individual also receives gifts from kings or authorities, being renowned. But if malefics (Saturn or Mars) are present, despitefully treated abroad and falls into poverty. Additionally, not succeeding overseas but involved in wanderings and danger. Similar to the 9th house, but on a smaller scale.

Joy of the Moon

The moon has its joy here, having some dignity and strength even if it’s in detriment/fall. If the moon is ruler of the 1st and placed here, well dignified, the individual will be great and master of many good things.

We have also done readings and seen people with Neptune here in the 3rd house having more vivid dreams – whether it’s dreaming about a passed pet or receiving messages from one’s unconscious and more.

While modern astrology associates the 3rd house with communication, its weightiness on this house pales in comparison to where Gemini and Mercury is placed in one’s chart. It’s also one of the reasons why we use traditional astrology with whole sign house system for natal chart readings instead of modern astrology with Placidus house system.

The third house has quite a few significations and it’s applicable even if you’re only an only child. Look to where the ruler of the sign, aspects its making and what planets are in your third house for a deeper analysis of all the topics mentioned.
